Here's another great plant for attracting bees - Biokovo cranesbill geranium!

Almost three years ago, I published a blog post extolling the virtues of perennial cranesbill geraniums as groundcovers.

At that time, I did a little kvetching about the fact that the cranesbill geraniums didn't seem to do a great job of attracting pollinators (which is always a high priority for me).

Well, I've added more cranesbills and they've expanded their territory and this year, for the first time, I noticed the 'Biokovo' variety of Geranium x cantabrigiense attracting a lot of bees - both bumblebees and honeybees!

The other cranesbills that I have - 'Rozanne' and a couple cultivars of Geranium sanguineum - don't seem as attractive to the bumbles or the honeybees, but they do seem to generate some interest from teeny-tiny pollinators (probably some sort of hoverfly or tiny wasp).

Anyway, there's no way that my camera is good enough to capture a video of the hoverflies, but I was able to shoot this short film of a bumblebee buzzing his way among 'Biokovo' flowers.

PS - Over time, I've changed my mind on a lot of groundcovers (and other plants). but I still think cranesbill geraniums -- especially the 'Biokovo' cultivar -- make excellent groundcovers, at least in my Tennessee garden!

Class of 2016 -- Oenothera fruticosa, sundrops




The sundrops have opened! Today is the second day I've seen flowers on Oenothera fruticosa.  
These are really bright, cheerful flowers that are visible way across the garden.
And the red buds provide extra appeal alongside the flowers.


Why I'm growing Oenothera fruticosa in my garden...

1) It's native to Tennessee and throughout much of the Eastern U.S. from Mississippi and Florida in the south all the way up to Michigan and New Hampshire in the north.

2) Virginia Native Plant Society calls it drought tolerant and deer resistant, able to grow on hot sites in poor dry soils with diurnal flowers that attract butterflies

3) Nicole Selby, a Gardener at The Scott Arboretum in Pennsylvania told me that O. fruticosa (which is also known as "narrowleaf primrose") seems to be a good plant for wildlife with insects visiting the flowers to feed on nectar, birds eating the seeds and mammals nibbling on the roots.

(That last bit about mammals eating the roots could be worrisome, but since O. fruticosa has a reputation of spreading both by seed and roots, perhaps the mammals just help keep the plant in check?)

4) Asheville Botanical Gardens says that sundrops can bloom for two months, attracting pollinators including sphinx moths, hummingbirds, honeybees and bumblebees. The foliage may have an evergreen reddish presence in winter.

Ah, to Bee in Paris!

Well, perhaps the last description is not so well-known, but it is accurate, at least in the case of the Hyatt Paris Madeleine, a charming boutique hotel with its very own honeybee hive right in the heart of Paris.

Whenever I travel, I always try to stay someplace that demonstrates some commitment to the environment.

The Hyatt Paris Madeleine recognizes that honeybees are in trouble and so it has installed and maintains this hive to show support for the bees.

I also like the fact that the hotel hosts an event where local elementary schoolchildren can watch a beekeeper harvest the honey and ask any questions they may have about bees or beekeeping.

Laura, who works in communications at the Hyatt, very kindly gave me a tour of the beehive area. Although she assured me that these are sweet-natured bees, I got to suit up in the white pullover and helmet that beekeepers wear. (Sorry I forgot to ask for a blogger-as-beekeeper photo.) Then we stepped gingerly out on the small balcony and I shot this video of the bees buzzing in and out of their hive.




(The suit seemed unnecessary. The bees did not seem at all perturbed by presence. In fact, they ignored me entirely.)

Later on, I got a chance to sample some of the latest crop of honey and was very impressed. I have to say that it's among the most floral and 'perfumed' honeys I've ever tasted. I'd even go so far as to call it a 'romantic' honey -- the bees have managed to imbue it with the spirit of Paris!

This little information card in all the rooms not only gives guests a chance to save water and detergent (by refraining from having their sheets laundered every day), it also makes sure they learn about the hotel's beekeeping program and hopefully sparks a conversation on the rationale and importance of such an initiative.


Laura mentioned that the chef in the Hyatt's on-site restaurants, Cafe M and Chinoiserie, incorporates the hotel's honey each year into a special dish/dishes. Last year, the honey showed up in a poached peach desert alongside lime blossoms and red currants. This year, the chef incorporated the honey into a sorbet (shown below).

Beyond the bees and the honey, the Hyatt Paris Madeleine is still a pretty sweet hotel. The rooms are modern and spacious (for Paris). There's even a little spa in the basement with steam room (they call it a 'hammam') and dry sauna, plus a small relaxation room for chilling out with ambient music.

And I got a kick out of learning that the glass ceiling in the hotel atrium was designed by the workshops of Gustave Eiffel.

You may have heard of Mr. Eiffel. He's well-known for a certain eponymous tower (visible from certain rooms at the Hyatt)...

From a practical standpoint, I should note that the Hyatt Paris Madeleine is very well-situated. It's near to several Metro stations (especially the Madeleine and Saint-Augustin stops) and I had no trouble walking from the hotel to the Tuileries garden, the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay or the Opera Garnier.

Travel Report -- Sweet (Bee) Dreams in Berlin at the Ritz-Carlton and the Scandic on Potsdamer Platz

In September, I took a trip to Germany and the Netherlands. Over the next few posts on Garden of Aaron, I'll be sharing some of my garden related experiences and memories from the trip.

But first, any travel involves finding a place to sleep. Personally, as a gardener, I try to find places with an eco-friendly sensibility.

In Berlin, I found two hotels that actually maintain their own beehives and produce their own honey - the Ritz-Carlton and the Scandic, both of which are on or near Potsdamer Platz.

Wikipedia has a great entry on the history of Potsdamer Platz, once the busiest public square in Europe. Destroyed in WWII and subsequently divided by the Berlin Wall, Potsdamer Platz became a desolate no man's land.

But after the Cold War ended and Germany reunified, the platz sprang back to life. For a while, it was the biggest construction site in Europe. Heavy investment has transformed it once more into a showcase for modern Germany.

All of which is to say that from a traveler's perspective, Potsdamer Platz is interesting, historical (you can still see remnants of the Berlin Wall) and convenient from a transit perspective.

When I started researching eco-friendly places to stay in Berlin, it was the beehives at the Ritz-Carlton that first caught my eye. Installed in 2011, the seven beehives house up to 400,000 (!) bees in the summer -- fewer in winter -- who collectively produce 250 to 400 kilograms of honey each year. Some of that honey shows up at breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, while jars of the sweet stuff can be purchased as souvenirs at the hotel's gift shop. Some of the honey even makes its way into the hotel's delicious signature lavender-honey cake!

Where do the bees gather their nectar and pollen in the midst of a giant urban area? Well, Potsdamer Platz is nearby the Tiergarten, a large city park. I also noticed quite a few bees buzzing around inside the display cases at local bakeries and donut shops. Coincidence? :)

The restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Berlin incorporates ingredients from approximately 5 acres of land that are farmed exclusively for the hotel. The farm is in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region, a couple of hours north of Berlin. In season, the farmer (who is also the supplier for the Ritz-Carlton Berlin's organic lamb meat) grows more than 60 kinds of organic and bio-certified vegetables and herbs for the hotel, including pumpkins, onions, carrots, cabbage, Jerusalem Artichoke (known locally as topinambur) and lavender.

The beehives are just one of the many environmental initiatives at the Ritz-Carlton Berlin, which recently became the first five-star-superior hotel to win certification from the EU's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. The hotel managed this feat by taking a number of eco-friendly steps, including installing energy-saving LED lights, using environmentally-friendly cleaning products and reducing water usage.

I was impressed to hear that the hotel partners with a recycling program to transform its paper waste into school notebooks. The hotel provides approximately 25 tons of paper materials every three months that are then processed into more than 1,300 notebooks, which are distributed to welfare organizations in Germany and abroad.

After a couple of nights at the Ritz-Carlton, I checked out and walked ten minutes to my next hotel, the nearby Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz.

This was my first time staying at a Scandic hotel. Headquartered in Sweden, Scandic is a Nordic company with hotels in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland.

The company has a long track record of supporting sustainability initiatives over the past two decades. One thing I really liked and don't think I'd ever seen at another hotel was the way the hotel had subdivided the in-room wastebasket to allow for easy separation of organic and paper wastestreams.

To reduce packaging waste, you'll notice that the hotel has done away with the innumerable little bottles of shampoo and body soap that you find in most hotels and replaced them with refillable pump bottles in the shower.

As a gardener, I loved the way that the hotel incorporated nature themes throughout its decor. For instance, this translucent panel between the shower and the bedroom is decorated with a leaf motif that glows when the bathroom light is on.

These nature motifs continue in the hallways, where murals (giant decals perhaps?) adorn the walls at the ends of the corridors. Piped in nature sounds such as birdsongs (motion-activated like the lights) provide a soothing soundtrack. I believe there are also ambient nature sounds in the elevators.
 
You'll even find the nature theme continued on some of the lampshades in the guest rooms at the Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz.

Clearly the Scandic has less Old World luxury than the Ritz-Carlton. Still, I was impressed with the Scandic's trendy modern design. I liked the wooden floors for instance, and the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz seemed really new and clean. Here's another eco-friendly design choice -- a dual-flush toilet designed to reduce water usage. I like how the Scandic shows that you don't have to sacrifice beauty when you emphasize eco-friendly design. Personally I think it would be nice if every toilet in hotels (or homes) offered the dual-flush option.

I didn't get a photo of it, but like the Ritz-Carlton, the Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz also produces and sells its own honey. Some of that honey also ends up on the breakfast buffet, which was included in our room rate and featured a selection of packaged and fresh organic products (which are typically labeled as "bio" in Europe).

So if you're a gardener or just a traveler who wants to support and encourage eco-friendly business practices while still enjoying a comfortable and convenient stay, I'd have no qualms about recommending either the Ritz-Carlton Berlin or the Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz.

(Well, maybe one qualm. In an effort to save energy, I believe the Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz turns off its air conditioning between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. We had a little bit of a warm spell during our time in Berlin and I did find it a little hard to sleep at night. I'm a little concerned that the room might become a sauna during a Berlin heatwave... Clearly I'm not the only one who had concerns over this practice. Reviews are generally very positive on Tripadvisor, but the few negative reviews generally reference the lack of nighttime A/C as the reason for giving a poor rating.)

Happy as a Bee in Hypericum



We always hear about bees being happy in clover, but I think they seem down right ecstatic gathering nectar or pollen from the many blooms of Hypericum frondosum "Sunburst".

About 18 months after I added it to the garden, Hypericum has done really well for me here in Tennessee so far. It's planted on a steep hillside and has endured the cold, hear, drought and rains beautifully. Not too surprising, as it is (according to Missouri Botanical Garden) native to rocky hills and barrens from Kentucky to Texas.

Ripe for Discussion: Honeybees, Grapefruits, Climate Change, Older Farmers, CKDu, Resource Limits and Increased Pesticide Usage

I've been collecting a number of interesting and/or disturbing gardening-related articles I've come across the past few weeks. Here are my interpretations of these stories:

- Harvard researchers laid the blame for honeybee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) squarely at the door of neonicotinoid pesticides.

- The Florida grapefruit industry apparently is collapsing largely due to plant diseases (canker and citrus greening) that we seem powerless to stop.

- A South Carolina gardener downplays the native-vs-exotic debate and emphasizes instead the importance of having a diverse and resilient garden to cope with erratic weather that he attributes to climate change.

- According to BloombergBusinessweek, the average age of American farmers - or the "principal operators" responsible for making decisions on farms - climbed to more than 58 years old. (That's an 8-year jump from 30 years ago.) The article went on to say that from 2007 to 2012, "the number of beginning farmers--those with less than 10 years on the farm--declined 20 percent."

- The New York Times reports that a mysterious disease being called chronic kidney disease of unknown causes (or CKDu) is killing sugar workers in Nicaragua. Some people think that herbicides sprayed on the fields may be a contributing factor. Legislators in El Salvador and Sri Lanka, where similar kidney ailments are appearing, reportedly are taking steps to ban certain herbicides in an effort to stop the disease. (Although the Times is careful to point out that there is no conclusive evidence linking the herbicides to the ailment.)

I thought of all these stories in light of two articles I read in the print version of the Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago. One was called "The Scarcity Fallace" in the offline edition, but apparently it was retitled "The World's Resources Aren't Running Out" in the online edition. The gist of the article is that most ecologists are Chicken Littles who run around screaming, "The sky is falling!" and warning that humans are about to run out of food, water, oil, etc. The author, Matt Ridley, counters by saying that human ingenuity has solved scarcity problems in the past and sanguinely proclaims we will surely solve them in the future. When we needed more food to feed burgeoning human populations, we invented fertilizers and machinery that allowed us to make farms more productive than ever. When we needed more fresh water, we invented desalination plants and became more efficient at using water via drip irrigation in places like Israel and Cyprus. While some namby-pamby naysayers say that affluent societies are bad for the planet because they use up more resources, Mr. Ridley proclaims that affluent societies are actually better for the planet. He points out that poor societies deforest their land for fuel, whereas rich societies maintain or increase their forest cover since they rely on oil, gas and other energy sources.

There are two possibilities. Mr. Ridley either truly believes we have nothing to worry about in terms of resource constraints as global human population continues to climb toward 10 billion. (Apparently he is the author of a book called The Rational Optimist, so he really might simply have a what-me-worry disposition.) Or he simply is so pro-business that he does not want to see any curbs on natural resource exploration and exploitation that might inhibit the ability of companies to earn profits.

I've read a couple of interesting online responses to "The Scarcity Fallacy". One points out that evidence exists humans don't always overcome resource constraints. The blog Yotta Point also published an excellent ripost.

Indeed, there are so many opportunities to pick apart Mr. Ridley's argument that one scarcely knows where to begin.

For now, I'll just point out the delicious irony that the same issue of The Wall Street Journal had a large article titled "Farmers Widen Arsenal to Combat Weeds." The online version of that article is subtitled "They [the farmers] Gain Edge Against Super Weeds but Add to Costs, Environmental Concerns."

Here are some stats from that article as of the year 2012:

- 42 million acres of soybeans treated with non-glyphosate herbicides, double the 2006 total and equal to 57% of all soybean acres. (Note that these are non-glyphosate because weeds have developed resistance to the massive amounts of glyphosate - a.k.a. Roundup - sprayed on crop fields. Although glyphosate is still used heavily and apparently still accounts for 83% of total herbicide used on soybeans.)

- More than 6 million pounds of 2,4-D herbicide, nearly four times the 2005 level.

- 87,000 pounds of dicamba, more than double the 2005 level.

- Herbicide expenses are doubling or tripling

- Some farmers think they may be winning ground against weeds, others are pleased simply to have (apparently) fought the weeds to a stalemate

- The USDA's data on herbicide use is no longer collected annually "due to budget constraints"

- Potential environmental risks are discussed in a single paragraph as follows: "Environmental groups and some farm activists fear that increased use of the harsher chemicals [e.g., 2,4-D and dicamba] will make more people sick and destroy more delicate crops, like grapes, that may be located nearby. Monstanto and Dow say the products are safe if used properly, and that new formulations will be less likely to affect other fields than older version."

- Some farmers are going back to hand-weeding and hoeing to remove weeds. (It's hard to tell from the article whether these farms have abandoned chemical herbicides altogether, but I think that's the implication.)


Let's just pause for a moment to give a slightly more thorough treatment to the risks of the two herbicides that the Journal notes are being used much more frequently and heavily than before.

First, 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). The USDA Forest Service (which uses 2,4-D in its vegetation management programs) has this to say:

Unless steps are taken to mitigate risks, workers involved in the application of 2,4-D and
members of the general public who consume vegetation contaminated with 2,4-D could be
exposed to 2,4-D levels greater than those which are generally regarded as acceptable. In some
cases, the exceedances are substantial. Similarly, adverse effects in the normal use of 2,4-D salts
or esters could occur in groups of nontarget organisms including terrestrial and aquatic plants,
mammals, and possibly birds. Adverse effects on aquatic animals are not likely with
formulations of 2,4-D salts except for accidental and extreme exposures at the upper ranges of
application rates. The ester formulations of 2,4-D are much more toxic to aquatic animals and
adverse effects are plausible in sensitive species and sometimes in relatively tolerant species. 

The results of this risk assessment suggest that consideration should be given to alternate
herbicides and that the use of 2,4-D should be limited to situations where other herbicides are

ineffective or to situations in which the risks posed by 2,4-D can be mitigated.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, as you can expect, takes an even more critical view of the chemical:

Despite dozens of scientific studies that link the toxic pesticide 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) to cancer and other health risks such as cell damage, hormonal interference, and reproductive problems, 46 million pounds of 2,4-D are applied to U.S. lawns, playgrounds, golf courses, and millions of acres of agricultural land every year. This toxic pesticide contaminates our air and water, finds its way into our homes where it poses a higher risk to children, and the use of 2,4-D could be on the rise if new genetically modified corn and soybean crops are approved. To protect the health of thousands of Americans, NRDC recommends that the Environmental Protection Agency restrict use of 2,4-D and that the U.S. Department of Agriculture not allow new 2,4-D Ready crops on the market.

(Note that if NRDC's numbers are correct, that 40 million of the 46 million pounds of 2,4-D sprayed annually in the U.S. are getting sprayed for non-agricultural -- probably mostly cosmetic -- uses.)

What about Dicamba? According to Extoxnet, Dicamba is "moderately toxic by ingestion and slightly toxic by inhalation or dermal exposure" as well as "very irritating and corrosive and can cause severe and permanent damage to the eyes". Extoxnet also says that "Dicamba does not bind to soil particles (Koc = 2 g/ml) (4) and is highly soluble in water. It is therefore highly mobile in the soil and may contaminate groundwater. Its leaching potential increases with precipitation and the volume applied."


So how are these two stories in the same issue of the Journal connected, and what relationship (if any) do they have to the other stories linked above?

I believe that Mr. Ridley is being naive if he thinks that human ingenuity can overcome what ever problems nature throws at us. It is true that we are often able to overcome a proximate problem with a technological solution, but our solution sometimes causes a whole cascade of other problems - unintended consequences - that we could not have foreseen.

So yes, we found ways to increase crop yields through the use of chemical fertilizers and massive applications of herbicides and pesticides, but at the price of polluting groundwater, potentially eradicating honeybees (and presumably other beneficial insects that don't get the same type of PR coverage), perhaps damaging countless "nontarget organisms" and stimulating the evolution of the very types of "undesirable" plants and insects that we are trying to kill.

Yes, Israeli and Cypriot farmers who bumped up against water constraints a long time ago may have figured out ways to use less water on their crops, but vast amounts of water reportedly still are wasted each year

And even though a given machine may get more efficient, we keep inventing so many new machines that world energy consumption is still predicted to climb dramatically over the next few decades. Our refrigerators and dishwashers may be far more efficient than they were 30 years ago, but our forebears (or younger selves) did not have multiple personal computers, DVD players, gaming consoles, tablets, mobile phones, etc. to charge and recharge like so many of us have nowadays. 

And there are literally billions more people on the planet than there were in the early 1980s, many of them clambering their way out of poverty and striving for the same sorts of modern energy-consuming appliances and machines that we in the United States take for granted as our birthright.

All of this would no doubt seem disconcerting or unpleasant to an optimist like Mr. Ridley who seems to wish to believe (like Dr. Pangloss from Candide) that we live in the best of all possible worlds. 

I had actually forgotten (until Wikipedia reminded me) about Candide's ultimate response to this optimistic, Panglossian view. Rather than blinkering our eyes to the problems that surround us, Candide says "We must cultivate our garden."

How wonderful! (At least, how wonderful for a gardener and garden blogger to discover/recover this fact.)

The problems that we face are so big and so complex and so much of our own doing that it could be disheartening to face them. If we really are about to run out of water and oil and land and food etc. then we would need to make major changes in our lifestyle and priorities to forestall or prevent such shortages. 

If these shortages are illusory, then no changes are necessary and we can carry on as profligately as ever, secure in the knowledge that some Deus ex machina inventions will come along and save us in the nick of time from our own folly. 

In 2008, then candidate Barack Obama got a lot of mileage out of the campaign theme: Hope and change

With regard to the ecological problems facing a world of 7+ billion humans living in industrialized or rapidly industrializing nations, I would repurpose that slogan so it reads: Hope, but Change

Yes, we can hope that technological progress will save us from some of our worst mistakes. But we should not wait idly hoping for such progress to rescue us from the jaws of disaster. Instead, we should change our ways to whatever extent we can to err on the side of caution and work to be less profligate in our resource use. 

If Mr. Ridley is correct and such resource limits prove to be illusory, no harm will have been inflicted except we will have lived a little less high on the hog than we otherwise would have done.

If Mr. Ridley is wrong, if resource constraints are as real as they sometimes appear to be, then mending our ways could stave off disaster - not just for us, but for the countless species of plants and animals with whom we share this lovely planet Earth.
